Two systems, one goal
If you've explored energy and space, you've met both Vastu and Feng Shui. They sound similar — both are about arranging your home so it supports you — but they come from different roots and work differently. Here's a clear comparison for a modern home in the US, Canada, Australia or Asia.
The origins
Vastu is the ancient Indian science of space, based on the five elements and the compass directions. Feng Shui is the Chinese system of energy flow (chi) through your environment. Both are thousands of years old; both aim to bring you into harmony with your surroundings.
How they differ
Direction: Vastu places strong emphasis on compass directions (north-east, south-west). Feng Shui focuses more on flow, placement and the "bagua" map. Elements: Vastu uses five elements (earth, water, fire, air, space); Feng Shui uses five too, but a different set and cycle. Fixes: Vastu leans on placement and structural alignment, while Feng Shui leans on objects, colours and flow.
Which should you choose?
For most modern homes, the honest answer is that the principles overlap more than they conflict. Vastu tends to give clearer, structural guidance for a whole home or office; Feng Shui is excellent for fine-tuning flow and individual rooms. You don't need both — you need one applied properly to YOUR layout.
The modern-home reality
Whichever you choose, the system must be adapted to apartments, condos and Western floor plans — not copy-pasted from a traditional Indian or Chinese house. That adaptation is exactly where an experienced consultant earns their value.
